NISH, a nonprofit organization that helps secure federal contracts for agencies that employ individuals with disabilities with the Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program, is working to alter the status quo. The Javits-Wagner-O'Day Program is that the largest single supply of jobs inside the U. S. for individuals with disabilities. Often mentioned like the JWOD program, it provides job opportunities for longer than 45,000 those who are blind or produce other severe disabilities.
With the JWOD program, NISH works having a network of greater than 600 nonprofit agencies that employ and train individuals with disabilities.
This program stems coming from the Wagner-O'Day Act, passed in 1938, which provided job opportunities to the blind by allowing them to be able to manufacture mops and brooms to sell towards the federal government. In 1971, Congress amended the act to incorporate individuals with severe disabilities and also to permit the agencies to supply services along with products.
