“Powering Off” or “Power On?”

Informasion, Tips and Strategi Business - Can you take your laptop on vacation? Can you sometimes “hate” your mobile phone or your Blackberry? Harris Interactive recently reported that one-third of vacationers take their laptops on vacation. During a Sunday meal at a restaurant recently, I observed a man sitting with his family talking on his mobile phone -- obviously about business. He wasn‘t happy – neither was his family!

“Powering Off” or “Power On?”

“Powering Off” or “Power On?”

To paraphrase Charles Dickens, “It is the greatest of times. It‘s the worst of times. ” Certainly that applies when one thinks of “connectivity. ” Stories of 9-11 victims having the ability to contact relations during the past minutes of the lives warmed my heart, as the story my friend told her mother answering her mobile phone inside the delivery room throughout the birth of her grandchild chilled my soul.

How grateful I‘d been for my mobile phone when I came across a young woman stalled with an interstate without one, and I can immediately get help. How convenient It‘s on vacation to make use of the Internet to understand more about the choices for entertainment inside the area on a rainy afternoon, and obtain directions to locate it easily. How comforting to understand that my loved ones can reach me just in case in an emergency – maybe to celebrate! -- no matter where I‘m on the planet. A similar could be said for my colleagues.

So here’s the question: Must you take your laptop on vacation? When does your mobile phone get on 24 / 7? Clients often ask, “What should We do? ” My answer: “That’s the incorrect question. The question is “What will you be doing? ” Maybe a good better question could be “What would you wish to carry out? ” Perhaps the very best question of is “What action will bring the finest results? ” to answer that question; you need to take time to answer “What are your very best results? ”

Repeatedly I‘ve emphasized that certain definition of “organization” is “controlling the things you can control so that you could cope using the stuff you can’t. ” Inside the complex world during which we live, particularly with the amount of connectivity available, it’s simple to fall straight into the trap of feeling that many of us are victims of many people. I cringe when someone complains about having to answer their mobile phone. Says who? In case you don’t enjoy being reached, you can “power off. ” If you need to be reachable because your job requires it, probably the question can be “Am I inside the right job? ” Or, have you merely trained people that you will be “always available. ” Customer service is great. However, it doesn’t require 24 / seven response. It requires good communication. It’s highly frustrating to leave a message and obtain no response for days, but few situations would suffer when the response came one hour later so you might have lunch having a colleague without interruption.

Connectivity could be addictive. My daughter, who has got her Ph.D. in counseling, reminded me that addiction is a thing that reduces the quality ever and also the people around you.

So exactly what does all of this have related to productivity? My passion is helping individuals and organizations create and sustain a productive environment so everyone can accomplish their work and revel in their lives. When used appropriately, connectivity does assist you to accomplish your projects and enable one to play. Additionally, it may undermine your priorities at work, destroy your health, and poison your relationships when used inappropriately.

The difficulty Isn‘t whether you are taking your laptop on vacation or leave your mobile phone on 24 / 7. For a lot of, a chance to check e-mail once each day on vacation brings peace of mind and can also be done when others are sleeping or swimming. For others, the entire concept of a vacation Isn‘t taking your laptop. There isn‘t any “right” or “wrong. ” The question is whether or not your decision is enhancing or diminishing your daily life and also the lives of the folks around you.

So “Power Off” or “Power On? ” – It's truly as much as you!
